Whither Thou Goest
One of the most prevalent emotional conditions experienced by persons in our culture is the state of being Co-Dependent.
In CO-DEPENDENCE we link the state of our happiness to the state of someone else's...we are dependent on someone else' s reaction or feeling and we let that reaction or feeling from another dictate how we are.
The reason we do this is because we have experienced pain from confrontation or abandonment and we fear the repeat of this experience. We fear it so much that we are constantly watchful and attentive to the emotional state of those around us...we try to keep them happy and satisfied but we are always ready for (and even expect) pain at any second.
Unconscious childhood wounds make us vulnerable to whatever someone else is going through. We are witnesses to their displeasure and immediately proceed to claim it as our own, not recognizing or acknowledging that we are separate individuals.
We are DEPENDENT on others for our emotional well-being.
The dysfunction we experienced as a child prevents us from clearly asking for what we would like to have (we don't feel the freedom to do this and the confidence that our request will be well-received). And because we have not entered into a dialogue to explain how we feel and invited an explanation of how another feels, we instead set up our own expectations regarding how we would like someone to act (and this feels safer for we can do it in our own minds without taking the chance of involving someone else and having to deal with what might be said).
Unfortunately, when we do not get the results we have expected (which occurs because we have not discussed the preferences of both parties), we then suffer.
And the fact is...we have brought that suffering on ourselves.
We have assumed that the things that have meaning and significance to us have the same meaning and significance to others. And when that meaning and significance are not similarly acknowledged, we draw the conclusion that we are not cared about.
And so we suffer. And needlessly...for every individual develops his own preferences and attaches his own meanings to objects and experiences. Just because someone has not acted in the way we would does not mean that the person does not care for us. What it does mean is that we have not bravely asked for what we would prefer and invited another to tell us his requests.
It is sometimes very frightening for co-dependent persons to have a direct conversation regarding their preferences but it is THE WAY to ensure that a decision can be negotiated...and agreed upon in a manner that will satisfy all parties involved.
When we do recognize that WE are the cause of our suffering because of experiences we have endured...we can clearly see that WE also have the power to change it. Though it can be a challenging and unfamiliar road to follow, it is the formula for self-approval, satisfaction and inner peace.
Obviously, our soul contract has been designed by us to include this very important work. We can transcend the sense of feeling helpless and vulnerable by speaking our truth and listening to others' truth, thereby emerging into independent, self-accepting and self-approving individuals who have come to terms with a limitation and turned it into a confident and self-caring lifestyle.
I speak my truth
so that I can keep my Heart FREE TO FLY.
I listen to your truth so that you Can Join Me.

The Intent Behind the Words
Psychologist Abraham Maslow constructed a hierarchy of basic needs shared by all earth dwellers.
Starting from the most basic and proceeding upward, they are:
Physiological needs (air, water, food, shelter)
Safety (emotional, physical, financial, etc.)
Love and Belonging (friendship, intimacy, family)
Esteem (self-value, self-respect)
Self-Actualization (to become everything one is capable of becoming)
One of the hallmarks of a person who is in the highest state (self-actualization) is the ability to evaluate what he hears according to INTENTION.
Since we are all creatures of earth school we sometimes express ourselves in language that is less than the beautiful message we hold deep in our hearts. This is especially true when our ego gets in the way. We struggle to find our way to a statement of unconditional acceptance and love and, instead, out comes a reflection of our unsettledness…our turmoil, our fear.
The less than stellar expression we may deliver is what happens when love tries to find its way through the maze of hurt and pain.
And, even though we often fall short of delivering our message the way we wish to, love and caring are often at its center. It is our translation…our execution that complicates the delivery of the message. We struggle with our experiences and fears. It is PAIN that masks the intent to speak with love, consideration and caring.
It is my feeling that we are, all of us, LOVE at our core being. Our earth challenges present us with the opportunity to confront and deal with our issues and find our way back to that core
On the way we may be less than we wish, we may say less than we wish to say, we may express ourselves through the haze of pain and suffering. But, underneath all of the words…the struggles…resides, I believe, the intent to return to LOVE.
As we do our spiritual work and rise to the level of self-actualization we find the ability to do what Don Miguel Ruiz suggests when we speak and interact with each other…“Listen to the intent behind the words.”
Ruiz says, “When I open myself to the truth and really listen, I understand the intent of a message; I feel the truth behind the words. The words lose their value, and the only thing that remains is the truth.”
Find your way to the intent behind the words and discover the love that is always waiting for you!

Do You See Me?
Oprah Winfrey's twenty-five year run on national TV was designed to give the television viewing audience the opportunity to learn what Oprah always called Living Your Best Life.
To this end she invited individuals of varied talents and skills to be guests on her show... encouraging the direct, honest sharing of what those individuals have learned in their life journeys.
She always demonstrated a very powerful interest when interviewing her guests in truly hearing and understanding what they had to say. She is a magnificent listener and learner and her guests always prized and savored her attention, entrusting many of the lessons learned on their spiritual journeys with Oprah and her devoted followers and fans.
Oprah's passion to listen and learn has made her not only a compelling TV personality but also a role model to all of us.
In her last broadcast of twenty-five years...when she spent the entire show talking about the most important things she had discovered through her work...Oprah shared this thought with the audience:
Everyone wants validating. Everybody wants to be heard. Every single person you will ever meet shares this common desire:
They want to know...
Do you see me?
Do you hear me?
Does what I say mean anything to you?
What a beautiful legacy and life lesson Oprah has gifted us with...and perhaps the secret to achieving a real CONNECTION with the individuals who populate our life.
It is not always easy to focus on another...when there is so much we want to say. But, when we are the only one doing the talking, we are not learning anything new and we are the only one starring in the production of our life.
And, really, the script is always essentially the same. It is our script....the script we have learned and written.
And when we only tell our stories we are depriving ourselves of the enriching experience of interacting and communicating and connecting. There is so much to be learned from being open to others...from listening to their responses...from sharing their adventures and challenges...and from hearing about the lessons they have learned.
There is such a beautiful variety of individuals in the world. No two alike. And why would we want them to be! When we interact with others it is very possible we will hear stories that don't match our experiences... stories that seem strange and foreign to us.
In those cases, we will probably not find common ground for agreement. But what we can do is learn about what is important to others.
We can honor their feelings and try to understand them. We can listen with sensitivity and caring and we can help them "see" us and know the substance of our hearts.
Just the giving of this one gift will make all the difference.
Just the generous desire to understand another's motivation, concerns, joy and pain and also to share our own story and feelings will produce an exquisite interaction.
Let's follow the wonderful inspiration of Oprah to live our best life by treasuring the gift of CONNECTING with others.
That connection will automatically happen when we make the effort to understand how others paint the picture of their lives and to share the landscape of our own.

The Beauty of Plan B
We’ve all been there. Our plans are set. We're ready to go. And then…something goes wrong. Now what do we do?
Logic tells us that if Plan A doesn’t work, we have to look elsewhere. But coming up with a Plan B and finding someone willing to make the switch is not always so easy.
Sometimes, however, we are gifted with having the perfect individual right there on the scene to help us make the transition.
Everyone loves the generous, free-spirited person who is willing and even happy to move effortlessly from Plan A to Plan B.
When someone can switch hats (and maybe even gears) and have fun doing it...what does that tell us about this individual?
For one thing, it's clear this special someone is not attached to "the way it needs to go down". Doesn't have to have it her way even though she may have a definite plan in mind.
And why do you suppose she's able to do that?
Could be she lives in the FLOW and can clearly see where the energy is moving.
She could be someone who's keenly aware of others and their comfort zones.
She might also like the challenge of stopping on a dime, changing directions and moving confidently forward with a new plan of action.
For sure, our heroine (or hero) has great instincts, is an attentive partner, is filled with a generosity of spirit and joyfulness informs her actions.
Perhaps the ability to access and enthusiastically embrace Plan B means our Higher Self has gotten into the game and is playing (and having fun) with us.
When the adoption of Plan B feels like an automatic GO...could be a sign we've gotten into the Big Leagues!

The RETURN
Making it through earth school requires holding two distinct perspectives about life.
One is the human adventure.
This experience is filled with excitement and discovery but also includes difficult moments of frustration as we try to make sense of our placement here on earth and the way the world operates.
It is filled with emotion of every kind...joy, delight, anxiety, fear...and, ultimately, the supreme sadness of loss of those close to us whom we have come to know and love
From this perspective we can easily feel bereft and alone.
The second and more important perspective is the adventure of our Spirit...and this one is very different. Clarity about this changes EVERYTHING!
Quantum physics now recognizes that everything we see and touch that feels so real to us is pure energy in manifestation.
This is also true of our bodies.
There is an etheric energy field that exists around our bodies and it can be seen by the human eye with practice and clear intention.
It extends approximately an inch or two beyond the body and is clear in color. When we view this etheric field it is impossible to fail to grasp that we are made up of pure energy.
Walking around viewing people in this light is like starring in your own Star Trek episode. It feels surreal. But it IS our life.
Scientists tell us that energy cannot be destroyed. It can only be transformed.
Ergo...since we are an energy field, WE cannot be destroyed by death. Our outer wrappings (earth clothes) can and do change. They self-destruct when we no longer need them.
We move to a different, more glorious vibration because when we undertook our earthly experiment we were already perfect (that is why we bravely accepted the challenge of moving to a lower density).
And that is why what we call "the ending" is really THE RETURN to our beautiful, already perfect selves...but now we are armed with the knowledge and experience we have so bravely gathered on earth.
We truly are SPIRITUAL WARRIORS on a mission of supreme importance. We are here to experience the darkness and the light. We are here to make choices and feel their consequences. We are here to learn lessons and, when we do, that learning is telepathically communicated to the world. We become teachers to each other.
How very courageous we are to accept (and design) our earth assignment and when we do make the vibrational shift back we will undoubtedly be overjoyed to return to the perfection of our Spirit Self.
LOVE is the unifying principle of the Divine Universe. It is Love that has prompted us to accept our earth challenge and it is Love that has inspired us to learn lessons for one another. And it is ultimately Love we will truly feel in all of its greatness and full glory when we finally return to our original vibration!

Divine Reminders
Dragonfly
Angeles Moreno / 2010 / Acrylic on canvas / 5 x 5 inches
Dragonflies are reminders that we are light and can reflect the light in powerful ways if we choose to do so. "Let there be light" is the divine prompting to use the creative imagination as a force within your life. They help you to see through your illusions and allow your own light to shine in a new vision.

The Glorious State of Grace
In her last broadcast she talked with the audience about the most important things she had learned from her guests during her show’s tenure.
One of the most significant, she said, was this:
ALL LIFE IS ENERGY. Every rock, every butterfly, every blade of grass…the sky, the clouds, your body, your thoughts, everything you see and feel…is energy.
We are responsible for the energy we create for ourselves.
We are also responsible for the energy that we bring to others.
A very commanding thought.
If…WE are responsible for the energy, then WE are the orginators, the creators…with all of the powers inherent in that title.
Dictionary.com says to create means to be the home of.
If we are the home… then we are the resting place where peace and nurturing are needed and the launching pad for vitality and action. Quite a responsibility. And privilege.
To do this well certain things seem important.
Seeing the soul view behind appearances
Telling ourselves the truth
Being aware of the consequences of our choices
Trusting in the Divine
Connecting with our Higher Self
Being open to learning our life lessons
Honoring our path and the paths of others
Loving ourselves and others
Feeling gratitude for the gifts of life
Experiencing JOY in the Present Moment.
When our world is filled with the presence of this goodness the energy we create for ourselves and the energy we bring to others will be life enhancing. We will be creating a glorious expansion of our own bliss.
Can we dream for a moment to a future where every person cultivates the most beautiful HOME for his energy?
What would the world look like if we each felt this glorious state of grace and sent out this wondrous gift to each other!

Spiritual Warriors
Earth School is not for the faint of heart.
Everyone who has chosen this path has, on some level, accepted a huge challenge: experiencing the density and duality of the third dimension including navigating the many obstacles placed in the path of learning our soul lessons.
Yes, we are - all of us - Spiritual Warriors.
Now for the good news. We are not being left alone in the dark.
We have all been gifted with a spiritual compass which helps us find our true north. That compass is the deep, abiding joy we feel when we act in alignment with our Higher Self.
Another way of saying this is we have chosen to respond from the perspective of Love.
Even if we do not reach the full expression of love...if we can clearly identify the behavior to which we aspire, we are poised to move with great power in that direction.
When we are out of sorts, or irritable or impatient this is an indicator to us that we are not in that spiritual alignment.
But when we choose to act from a place of peace and acceptance and compassion...it doesn't matter how difficult the circumstances are for we transcend the darkness and difficulty by introducing the Light of Love. In this way we need not fear what challenges we find in our path for our only concern is the energy we choose to bring to the occasion.
Spiritual Warriors need only the desire and commitment to follow the promptings of their soul and they will surely be shown whatever they need to know.

Inchworms, Turtles and the Finishing Line
We all know about the tortoise who won the race. And the inchworm who edged his way to success.
Something in their “stories” gave them the persistence and tenacity to complete the tasks they set out to do.
Perhaps the tortoise and inchworm had an innate impulse to go the distance.
Perhaps they very wisely balanced their lives and conserved their energy so they could call upon their reserves of wellness and vitality when this was most needed.
And perhaps they were so fortunate as many of us are to have a very special inspiration figuring predominantly in our lives…the masculine energy that is holding so strongly the image of our success…despite all odds.
That kind of special faith and support is often personalized in our father or father figure or someone close who is inhabiting that role for us…sending us light and energy to help us stay the course…to dig deep inside us to find the reserves of strength we need.
Mr. Miyagi in the Karate Kid did that for Daniel-san.
Miyagi always held a knowingness of the power and goodness of Daniel-san. He instilled a strong sense of honor in the young man and taught him that it is the way he conducts himself that determines whether he has successfully run (and completed) the race.
On the occasion of Father’s Day this June 19 let us take a moment to thank all of our real life and symbolic fathers in appreciation for their precious gift of faith in our goodness and strength and in our ability to navigate life with courage and honor.
And a special shout out for the very masculine preference for lightness and humor in this very challenging work. As Mr. Miyagi tells Daniel-san,
Man who catch fly with chopstick accomplish anything.

Swept Away!
Several years ago...for my birthday...I took a ride on a glider.
It was wonderful using only the wind to power my journey!
I felt so free to be supported in this way. There was no effort involved for me...only the choice to take the ride. There was nothing for me to do but ENJOY.
I felt a sense of awe at the way the earth was moving beneath me. Lovely images appeared...seemingly for my approval...and then moved on.
The "big picture" presented itself to me like the answer to a question I didn't even have to ask.
I felt protected, loved and inspired.
Can you imagine what it would be like to have that experience every day?
This wondrous ride IS always and ever available to us,
It's called the Flow of the Universe and it moves through everything! It is a mighty, powerful force and is always working for our Highest Good.
Our job is to recognize its presence and power.
When we fail to do that we try to WILL our lives into happening the way we think they should be. We struggle against the current...trying to make sure WE remember everything important to do...trying to do everything OURSELVES...resisting the magnificent, all powerful, all knowing force that loves us so dearly and manifests this love by arranging our life experiences according to the intentions of our soul.
The Daily OM inspiring message tells us:
Learning to step into the flow can help you feel a connection to a force that is greater than you and is always there to support you.
The decision to go with the flow can take courage because you are surrendering the notion that you need to do everything by yourself.
Riding the flow of the universe can be effortless, exhilarating, and not like anything that you ever expected. When you are open to being in this flow, you open yourself to possibilities that exist beyond the grasp of your control.
As a child, you were naturally swept by the flow. Tears of sadness falling down your face could just as quickly turn to tears of laughter. Just the tiniest wave carrying you forward off the shores of the ocean could carry you into peals of delight.
Our souls feel good when we go with the flow of the universe. All we have to do is make the choice to ride its currents.
Let us embrace this beautiful invitation from the Daily OM:
Move with the flow like a sailor using the wind, trusting that the universe is taking you "exactly where you need to be..."

Coloring Outside the Lines
As little children we were often gifted by family and friends with coloring books.
These books had very distinct pictures of people and places and things. The guidelines, no doubt, helped us learn about the many aspects of life and told us what to expect from our surroundings.
We were instructed by most of our supervising adults to color carefully inside the lines …and we learned to do so. This served us well for a time…but life proved to be much bigger and bolder and more complex than that original coloring book.
Coloring inside the lines is a careful response to what we have learned to expect. Stimulus…and reponse. Coloring inside the lines is often our goal. So precise, so clear…so easy to understand.
And we often carry this preoccupation over into adulthood into the world of interpersonal communication…anticipating that the people in our lives will fulfill our expectations. When they do, we know exactly how to proceed…what “colors” to choose, what the “picture” should look like.
But… when the people and circumstances and events in our lives don’t look like the pictures in our coloring books (our images of them), we can’t use this childhood process.
Coloring inside the lines won’t work because the people, places and things won’t stay inside them.
And this is not a bad thing.
In fact, it’s a wondrous, challenging thing. Admittedly, sometimes it is very, very difficult…and sometimes very messy. We have to color outside the original lines. We have to see what boundaries will fit each picture (and try to honor and respect them) and we can’t determine that ahead of time. We have to watch where the borders are each moment for they are constantly moving. We have to see how the whole picture itself looks and how it meshes with ours.
To put this in human terms:
If we have a certain image of someone or something and then we see that based on what is happening, the image we have is not holding, it is very natural to be distressed. But the problem isn’t with the person or thing or circumstance; the problem is the fact that we are holding onto our old coloring book with a very structured mind picture we have created.
In doing this we are missing the opportunity to see what really exists in this LIVING work of art.
We are missing the opportunity to learn something new from each other.
We are missing the opportunity to be brave and adventurous...to engage in life and be fully present in that Moment.
If we only color inside the lines, we are missing out on one of the most profound and moving opportunities of life.
Let's redefine our creation to include the bold and bright colors that rush headlong into each other alongside the soft and gentle hues that open channels of converging energy with their loving interactions.
All are brilliant and beautiful. All tell the story of how we come together and, sometimes, stand apart.
Perhaps the ENGAGEMENT with this colorful, messy, ever moving picture is an ART unto itself.

Blog Angels
I often awake in the morning laughing at my BLOG ANGELS. They all seem to be crowding around each other, wanting a turn to whisper a topic for my blog to me.
That is how my ideas come in.
In a whisper…and sometimes in an image.
Then… the blog posts start writing themselves (I know the angels are behind this) while I am still in bed. I have to hurry and get myself up and to the computer where I am happy to say the blog posts basically write themselves.
I am the keyboarder…the instrument…I get to use my writing skills to co-create and it’s a very joyous undertaking.
Today it’s time to celebrate the blog angels because this is my 100th blog post…so, good work, you guys!
By way of celebration, I want to give a shout out to some of the blog posts of the last year.

A Sprinkling of Moonbeams
Sometimes in fantasies we see a mystical creature sprinkle a kind of magical dust over the heads of the characters empowering them to see an entirely different view of what is happening than the one they usually see.
This, I think, could be called a SOUL VIEW.
It’s the true story of what is occurring and it is not what our eyes usually see or our (very human) feelings feel... but it is the deeper truth of that moment.
If we are able to access that view so much will make soul sense to us.
Difficult, challenging…sometimes painful and wrenching experiences will reveal themselves to be the vehicles for transformation.
Expressions of anger and hostility transmute into disclosure of FEAR.
All negative emotions reveal themselves to be the outer wrappings of pain.
Trusting in this process gives us the courage we need to embrace what is happening and to consciously ask to learn the lesson. The legacy awaiting us for doing this work is so beautifully expressed by Meredith Murphy:
There is harmony and purpose in all of existence. To experience ongoing bliss and peace, you must learn to seek and see the deeper meaning present in layer upon layer of all aspects of life, and the inherent union and harmony expressed by the Law of One.

Changing Dogs Into Cats
This morning I laughed out loud as I read an inspirational message from Don Miguel Ruiz about accepting others the way they are.
Ruiz said to try to change others to fit what you want them to be is like trying to change a dog into a cat.
When he says it that way, it’s abundantly clear how ludicrous the idea is.
And still we persist in our folly.
The question is WHY.
Is it because it feels so comfortable to have someone recite the "lines" we write for them? Then we know what to expect. We get just what we wanted. But…did we learn anything?
Is it because we are focusing on the microcosm of our little world and we forget there’s a macrocosm circling all around us? Remembering that sounds like work…doesn’t it?
Is it because reminding ourselves who is the dog and who is the cat means we have to be in top form…centered, balanced, loving, calm? Wow…to do that we have to take really good care of ourselves…all the time!
It seems like there is a Dogs are Dogs and Cats are Cats School and someone enrolled us when we weren’t looking.
The price for not doing our homework is perpetual frustration. The reward for figuring out this one is peaceful cohabitation.

No Waiting
Everyone loves to see
the No Waiting sign when we are trying to access someplace. Who wants to wait when we are ready to roll?
If we have to wait, then we can’t move forward on our wonderful plans! If someone else needs to do something so we can move along, then we aren’t the captains of our ship…merely passengers waiting for the “Go Ahead – All is Clear” sign.
I got a wonderful surprise when I decided to compile a list for my year-long celebration of my birthday! Instead of waiting to see what the day would bring…who would remember my birthday…how would they remember it… Instead of all of that waiting, I decided who would celebrate it – ME!
I celebrated it by declaring a year long theme and planning how to implement it. (See my last blog post entitled “Happy Birthday to Me!”)
My list included what I had learned during the past year so that became a part of my celebration, too. And I started to implement it in stages even days before my birthday.
This turned out to be a wonderful reminder of many things I had been thinking about doing but had not quite gotten to. Now I had some extra motivation to move them into my day. And each time I did something on the list, I got a super good feeling about myself.
NOW who’s giving the presents!!!
It’s a fabulous birthday party with myself (in addition to the other celebrations by family and friends). And there was No Waiting to see what would bring me joy.
I filled the joy balloon myself and my list is giving me a never ending supply of soul-helium to keep those balloons afloat.
No waiting for happiness. Just grab it and run…This is truly the gift that keeps on giving!
p.s. In case you missed my last blog, here are my year-long birthday theme and list so far:
