The Gift We Give Ourselves

What really fills the human being is

not the power and the money...it is

  a full encounter with yourself...a

discovery of your own self...and a

  strengthening of your energy and

your manner of life full of activities

  and satisfactions.”

               Gerardo Moreno

It's Christmas morning and we are surrounded with wonderful presents... things we have really been wanting.  Ice skates, perhaps a Gucci bag, surround sound, tickets to a Nicks game, coffee shop gift cards, CD's, books to read, games to play...yadda, yadda, yadda.  And...Are we happy now?

Well, for sure, we're plenty excited...at first.  I mean we got exactly what we asked for.  Wrapped in a gorgeous box with a silvery ribbon...perfection!

However, as wonderful as it is to receive exactly what we desire, the shelf life of this pleasure has an expiration date.  It's so nice to know we are loved and thought of and cared about, but as we reach deep inside ourselves, we find that there is something even more important and longer lasting than the affection and regard of others...and THAT something has infinite staying power...loving OURSELVES.  Having what Gerardo Moreno calls a "full encounter" with ourselves...the discovery of who we truly are.  A full on assessment of our hopes, dreams, feelings, reactions, responses, the dark and light of us, what our emotions are telling us, the messages of our body.  And then, after some deep, authentic soul-searching. an intention and commitment to keep ourselves evolving, to strengthen our energy, to grow into the Next, Grandest Version of Ourselves.

To do this takes effort, activity, releasing, risk taking and, most important of all, giving ourselves a boatload of love and compassion for the many adventures we will navigate in life.

This very personal work IS the Christmas gift we give ourselves.  No price tag on it.  Can't buy it anywhere or have someone give it to us.  WE have to do the work.  We have to care about ourselves enough to look deeply into our hearts, to uncover and release the pockets of pain and satisfy the longing.

And, beautifully, this challenging work is a very inspiring enterprise.  We are handsomely rewarded for this effort because it "fills our souls" and when we truly love ourselves, this beautiful, grace-filled Joy spills over onto everyone around us and reaches out to help change the world.

Mary Oliver’s Question

What are you going to do with your one wild and precious life?

           Mary Oliver

“To live in gratitude is to enjoy every moment of this precious gift that comes from God.”

                             don Miguel Ruiz

Yes.  Your one wild and precious life Mary Oliver describes is being lived through a pandemic.  You are being challenged with discouraging and disruptive issues.  Physical, intellectual, emotional trauma.  But it is YOUR “one wild and precious life”.  And it counts.

What are you going to do with it?

You are going to start with facing the reality of what is.  You are going to use your considerable emotional intelligence to see FOR YOURSELF what there is to know.  Not blindly follow the interpretations of others nor the exaggerations and hyperbole of their theories.

You are going to ask YOUR heart how it wants to respond and see what brings you calm and peace.  What action you can take to make a difference in this devastating experiment your soul has volunteered to be a part of.

You are going to recognize the profound significance of your participation.  The depth and intensity of this moment.  And the glorious opportunity you have to support, encourage and influence others.  To work with your global family to collectively move planet earth into a new dimension.

Yes.  It is a wild and simultaneously precious time.  There is work to be done.  And you are here to do it.

This is SHOW BUSINESS, folks

Do you suffer from a distressing reaction when someone around you is upset and even though it's not about you, it still FEELS like it is.

ouch...Ouch...OUCH!  That is no fun place to be, carrying all that gloom.

I've got an idea about how to get OUT from UNDER that web of co-dependency on someone else's emotions.  And it's frivolous and silly and no one else will even get the humor of what you are doing but YOU will be laughing inside (and tickling your funny bone).

Here's my thought.  Become Alice...you know, Alice in Wonderland but this wonderland doesn't belong to the original Alice.  It's YOUR "wonder"land.  And here's what you're wondering about.

You're wondering how these strange characters (your family, your friends, everyone you run into) got into YOUR story...that's YOUR life, YOUR Wonderland.  And, you're wondering about the curious, quaint and sometimes mystifying ways they think and do things.  And so you're enjoying watching them as they go through their individual routines (that's right...I said routines...this is show business, folks).

I wonder if they are there to entertain you with their perplexing and sometimes offbeat moves.  Each one is an original character with a back story and adventures to take on.  How DID they land at your tea party!

Of course.  I forgot you're Alice and you've gone down the rabbit hole they call earth school and now you get to meet these characters, watch their antics, interact (play) with them.  Remember, this is a fantasy drama, a PLAY for goodness sakes.

NOW...what does your story look like?

The Gift of Light

Saturday, December 22, 201

To heal others with light start by drawing in as much light as you can imagine and putting it all around you. Then imagine yourself as clear as a crystal, so that you are a pure transmitter of light. Send the other person an image of light.

Imagine light going out from your hands, your heart, or the top of your head as if you are sending a stream of light from you to him or her.

That is all that is necessary; your Higher Self will handle all the details. You need only to have the intent to send healing energy as you transmit light, and you will.

Spiritual Growth: Being Your Higher Self
Sanaya Roman

As we connect with our Higher Selves we become aware of new and powerful ways to experience our beauty. One of these is by the transmitting of our love and concern and compassion to others and especially when those others are enduring suffering and pain.

Light transmits energy and we are energetic beings. We can share our energy with others by focusing on this gift and sending it with love to those we wish to help heal.

(Incidentally, we can also send it to our bodies…to any place where we are experiencing pain or discomfort.)

Light is one of the most glorious ways we have to reach one another.

We are all vibrating Beings of Light and this kind of communication is natural to our Higher Selves.

May you know the force is with you.

All Voices

To achieve greatness you must listen to the smallest voice.  All voices have something to say. ✨

   J. Richard Jacobs

The beautiful melodies of Christmas carols encompass a bounty of musical offerings from the powerful, majestic strains of the herald angels to the whisper-soft murmurings of a silent night.  Many messages are flowing to us during this awesome season inviting us to celebrate, appreciate, honor and, especially, grow in awareness.  A heavenly reminder of the importance of paying attention to everything that is unfolding in our lives.

Including the voices that speak to us.  Some forcefully and with great authority that are impossible to resist.  Some honoring the gifts of the world that draw us into festivity and merriment.  And the much softer voices that can be easily passed by but that represent so saliently the message of a heart.  And, therefore, a truth that can engage and instruct us.

All music celebrates the human spirit.  All voices have something to say.

When I can't sleep, I sometimes listen for the trains that run through Rockville at night.  For some reason, that relaxes me...

 Duane Brewster

I think the sound of trains is relaxing, too. Unfortunately, I live miles away from a train track!  But when I was a little kid I could hear the trains in the night and it was a reassuring, comforting sound.

Susannah MacDonald

When we finally turn in for the night and settle our weary bodies onto the comfort of an inviting mattress and sumptuous, down-filled pillows, there is an elusive, mystifying silence that seems to overlay the moment.  It's as if this silence has always been there nestled gently under the rush of activities of the day, but now we are finally quiet enough to hear it.

And this silence has a very dramatic property.  It is a reminder of the beauty of the stillness of our souls, the stillness of peace and serenity when we are not engaged and engulfed by our to-do lists.  The only thing able to flood the stillness now is the treadmill of our mind making its daily run over what remains unfinished or unresolved.  It is now that we desperately need to put that mental exercise to rest.  It is now that we need to breathe into our hearts and surrender our cares.  And it is now that the steady and gentle hum of the passing train reminds us that we are safe...we are "home"...as we fall softly into that peace.

Interestingly, if we could peek under the many sparkling Christmas trees standing tall in our homes filled with gorgeous lights and adorned with our traditional ornaments, we would often see a child's beloved train circling the beautiful "celebration".

"A Little Child Shall Lead Them" Isaiah 11:1-10

Infrastructure

Close your eyes for a moment, and imagine how you would relate to the rest of the world if  LOVE was always moving through you.

  Don Miguel Ruiz

The sun, the rain and the soil nurture seeds which have been planted, gracing them with the life force to bloom into brilliant blossoms.

Propellers of planes
in motion engage the natural laws of the universe, lifting and moving massive machinery effortlessly through the air.

The waves of our oceans methodically surge and swell, laying their burdens thankfully upon the sandy shore.

We, also, are gifted with a spiritual infrastructurewhich has the authority to inspire, nurture, empower and sustain us as we traverse our lives.   It is Love which is our sun, our power.  It is Love that provides the wind beneath our wings.
It is Love whose rhythm moves us elegantly through our journey, aligning us with the Truth of the Universe and gifting us with the grace of surrender.

We do not need to engage in the weariness of "trying to make things happen", only

a tapping in to the force which has created life itself.

The Author of Our Stories

Everything in your story is constantly changing, including the story that you tell yourself about who you are.

             don Miguel Ruiz

The bedtime stories we tell our children are so appealing to them because they resonate with their hearts. There is adventure in them...challengevictory.  By the end of the story ultimately, peace prevails...and joy...two things we all long for.

Little children sleep so peacefully after hearing a loving narration such as this because The Divine Universe is leading us back to the realization that we truly are Pure Loveand that our essence is bright, bold, beautiful, expansive.  The guardians of our lives… parents and parent figures...are meant to live the role of gentle reminders to us of our awesome nature.

As we grow and mature, we take over the role of the parental figure as storyteller to ourselves.
But, sometimes, we forget the truth of what we felt so strongly as children..the joy  of our  invincibility.  We  forget Who We Truly Are.  And, often, our stories begin to show evidence of disappointment and self judgment because the world tries to inflict its own values upon us and, in trying to satisfy others, we override the innate clarity we possessed as children in knowing so clearly what "music" made our hearts sing.

And, so, we are sometimes left with stories mirroring the expectation of others and the pain of our compliance
because we do not recognize our worthiness, our endowment in the Grand Experiment to return to Who We Truly Are.

Don Miguel Ruiz reminds us that the stories we tell ourselves...the stories we, therefore, live...are constantly evolving, reflecting the changing image we hold of ourselves.  If we subject ourselves to the burden of meeting others' expectations, that is what our stories...and lives...will reflect.  And they may well hold unconscious anger and deep resentment.   Conversely, if we are open to the many clues The Divine Universe provides us with and we honor its guidancewe come to clearly see that true happiness does not result from following the perceptions and value systems of others but rather from  listening to the guidance of OUR OWN HEARTS.  And, when we do, we experience a deep sense that all is right with the world and, that is, because all is right in our own hearts.

We are meant to be the authors of our stories.  The acceptance of this wisdom transforms our stories with the alchemy of love, returning them to the beauty and joy and simplicity of our childhood innocence and wisdom when we possessed the clarity of knowing what felt right for us andthe boldness and courage to bring it into our lives.

Can you clearly see the stories you tell yourself?
And, can you recognize that these stories proceed from the beliefs you hold, regardless of where you got them?

If your beliefs are not bringing you peace and joy, perhaps they are not truly resonant with Who You Truly Are.  Can you consider finding a story that brings you to this beautiful place? And, are you willing to see if that new story truly fills the longing of your heart?

When We Are Ready

The creator gathered all of creation and said,
“I want to hide something from the humans until they are
  ready for it.

It is the realization that they create their own reality.

The Eagle said, "Give it to me, i will take it to the moon."
The creator said, "No, one day they will go there and find it."

The salmon said, "I will bury it at the bottom of the ocean."
The creator said, "No, they will go there, too."

The buffalo said, "I will bury it on the great plains."
The creator said, "No, they will cut the skin of the Earth and find it even there.”

“Grandmother mole, who lives in the breast of Mother earth and who has no physical eyes but sees with spiritual eyes, said, “Put it inside of them.

And the creator said, “It is done!”

Island Metaphor

Imagine you have been selected to appear on the newest reality show which will be taking place on an amazing island where everything you might possibly need has already been provided.  No matter what you decide to do...design something, construct something, invent something…ALL resources are available.  But, and here is the sticking point, they are hidden within the topography of the island.  They are most certainly there, but they are not easy to see.  And they emerge into your view only when you are truly ready for them and not a moment before.

The challenge then becomes how does one get ready to receive these resources?  And this cannot be done through manipulation, force or trickery. Only authentic responses ensure their accessibility.

Welcome to the reality show of your life!  And it is simultaneously amazing and magical while confusing and challenging, too.

And this is because we perceive that we live in linear time but, in fact, there is only the NOW.  The past and the future are only an illusion but we are so convinced of them that we can only recognize things within the context of logical progression.  And so we fail to see that the opportunities… the resources… are ALWAYS available but, because of our programming, they are hidden in plain sight.

Wondrously, it appears the Divine Universe is designed to accompany us on our journey and offer us support precisely at the moment we are ready to receive it.

Isn't it amazing how so many of the things we need arrive
              at just the opportune moment.
Almost like magic or a miracle.
But it can't be a miracle if it is already there.
It just must be something in us has let us see what we need.

                                               Paradigm Shift

In the reality show of our life we move through a series of challenges designed by our soul to learn lessons and help us develop character traits. If we authentically embrace whatever is being presented to us and offer no resistance, we are "ready" and the Universe  makes accessible to us whatever ideas or resources are necessary to navigate our path.

What so often appears to be a coincidence or good fortune that has just occurred, in reality, has been residing in the eternal NOW, awaiting our awareness and receptivity.
.

If, indeed, everything we ever need to grow and evolve is available to us whenever we are ready to "see" it, could we possibly live in a more loving and compassionate Universe?  Cerebral, provocative, emotionally rich and intelligent.  Profound in conception.   Home.

Groundhog Day Revisited

You are here to learn from experience and create yourself over and over again.

Paradigm Shift

In the movie Groundhog Day Bill Murray plays a weatherman who is assigned to cover the annual emergence of the groundhog from its hole.  He finds himself enfolded in a blizzard that he didn't see coming and relives the same day over and over, experimenting with his actions and reactions each day, eventually evolving into a Higher version of himself.

On a primal level,  this is the story of every man's assignment in earth school.  We run into "blizzards" we didn't see coming and eventually learn to surrender to what IS happening...or not.  The choice is ours.  We can flow with the energy or push against it with resistance.  Our work is to choose a reaction or response to each blizzard and see if we like how it feels to us.  If we don't like the feeling we get from our choice of action or reaction, we can choose to do something different and see how that feels.

Like Bill Murray in the movie, we have unlimited opportunities.  And it is very interesting to note that after some experimenting and experiencing of the consequences, Murray ultimately decides to become a Higher version of himself.  Given the opportunity to respond in any direction, he chooses the path of generosity and caring.  This choice brings him delight, leading me to conclude in this analogy that we are happiest when we follow the impulses of the heart.

Groundhog Day is a traditional holiday celebrated on February 2nd, but we live our "Groundhog Day" on a daily basis and that is a good thing for we get endless opportunities to become the next, grandest version of ourselves.

How best to evolve and find peace and serenity?  That is a question we all live with. It is my belief that we ARE MADE from love, that we in our essence ARE love and that when we ACT FROM love, we sense and enjoy our true nature.

Dennis Waitley, American motivational speaker, writer and consultant, has a beautiful prescription for this question.  Waitley says:

Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude.

Regardless of how entangled we get in our own snowstorms and blizzards, how lost we might feel during moments of fear or distress… the simple formula of love, grace and gratitude feels like the way of Providence bringing us home to ourselves.

The Unpacking

It’s a good start.  An important start. But it’s only the beginning.

Some kind of legislation regarding police brutality is apparently something all of our lawmakers can wrap their brains around…at least when thousands of people in every state keep marching to demand reform.

But there is so much to unpack here.  And that unpacking has to do with a heavy burden of systemic racism that lies at the very foundation of our country.  Racism that has produced unrest, unease, riots, injury, death.  Negative behavior all stemming from one primal source:  fear.

And that fear is what we must all understand.  That fear is what has sourced the negative behavior. And that fear has been deliberately stoked repeatedly to separate us even more from each other.

There are two primal emotions. Fear is one and loveis the other.  The more we cultivate one, the less room there is for the other.

We have seen what more fear can do but what of this equation:  more love, less fear.

We can actually use love to TRANSMUTE fear.  We can use it in this way.

Instead of dividing into two primary parties each determined to prove the other wrong (our traditional response), we can instead...and this may seem radical and difficult and uncomfortable...

We can, instead, make an effort to uncover what is causing the fear.  And we do that through the peaceful effort of LISTENING to UNDERSTAND.  To understand another’s experiences.  The personal experiences that have shaped and formed their beliefs and life view.  The personal experiences that have caused them pain and that may have been left unhealed to rise up, agitate, compel, incite and sear the soul.

“Listening to understand” means no countering with our feelings and experiences...only listening to THEIRS.

And here’s why.  What every Individual needs is to be listened to objectively, nonjudgmentally, compassionately.  Until every person feels heard and understood.  Not countered with another’s beliefs...just heard and understood.

When people feel heard and truly understood, something softens inside them.  They leave the brittle cave they have sequestered themselves in and begin to see beyond their own experiences, their own pain.  They don’t forget the pain but rather become capable of recognizing others’ pain.  And this is a necessary foundation for the realization that we all share a common humanity.  That we are all One.

This is the unpacking that must be done.  And it must be done by everyone… for everyone.

One by one, we begin.  Stepping past our own beliefs, we open our hearts to minister to each other’s pain.

I wonder...
What if no one "argued" religion or politics...or anything else for that matter?  What if we all talked to each other to learn about what others believe and why and how their beliefs have affected their lives?

What if we all listened to what others said without feeling threatened or intimidated?  What if we had nothing to prove and, possibly, something to learn from hearing other points of view?

The world would surely be a very different place than the way it is now.  It would more closely resemble a gathering of curious scholars and philosophers than  being the hotbed it is of arguments and disputes that have culminated in unrest, injury and violence.

Why do we have a need to compel or persuade others to "see things our way"?  Why is it so threatening to us that others reject our beliefs?  Why do we need to see OUR ideas prevail? And why are some of us sometimes willing to inflict mental, emotional or physical injury on those who do not share our views?

Have we not come to this earthly dimension to learn, to experience, to discover for ourselves what there is to know?  And are we not gifted with the company and comradeship of other earth travelers who are also here to discover FOR THEMSELVES what there is to know?  Why argue with each other when everyone has been given this same calling?  Why not stay open to learning what has been noticed, accepted, embraced and assimilated by others and try to understand what they have learned that has felt so important and appealing to them?

Can you imagine the wealth of sharing and mutual support that would take place if every man clearly embraced his highest calling "to understand"...one of the most powerful and needed changes that could ever occur on our planet.

Can we help each other UNPACK the stories that burden us, creating a space for mutual understanding and shared compassion?  Can we embrace the practice of love rather than feel the fury of fear?

Primal Emotions

There is a great divide in our country, the blatant truth of which has not always been completely transparent.  But there is no question now regarding the fierce, consuming passion of the opposing positions.

Whatever is fueling the contradictory views is sourced in a primal emotion that informs and directs all of our actions and reactions.  That primal emotion is the result of our experiences.  What we have lived and seen and benefitted OR suffered from plays a major role in the way we view the world.  Whether that experience was life affirming or full of hurt and pain, we are shaped and formed by how it made us feel.

The  critical questions in this moment are whether or not we replay what we have seen and lived through AND whether or not we decide if that path feels peaceful and satisfying to us and honors our soul.

Two primal emotions source the trajectory of all we do.  Will it be Love or Fear that lies at the heart of how we move through the world?

This is a question each of us must answer for ourselves.

The Business of Healing

In the last several months, a vast amount of our collective energy in the United States has been engaged in a battle of opposing value systems.  Each party is hoping to Introduce legislation to further its goals.  And, failing that and, as a back up plan, there is a bitter battle ensuing over the issue of  the majority rule in the final arbitration of the Supreme Court on pending cases and those which will reach this level of jurisdiction.

The premise behind these actions is the philosophy of Might Makes Right.  And it is true that the party in power can legislate laws to compel obedience upon threat of penalty.  This is theory X:  heightened supervision, external rewards and penalties.  As, for example,  theory X parents can be certain their children are following their rules As Long As they can control their children’s activities.

Fear rules.  Order can theoretically be compelled.  But, ultimately,  the heart is the source which drives behavior and, ultimately, it prevails.  It may take quite a while for it to finally speak and be heard.  But it will be heard.  And it must be heard for all lasting change marches to this Divine drummer.

The changes that we are all trying to achieve through legislation will not endure.  Ultimately, they will only be sustained through the healing of hearts.

Which brings me to the business of healing.  The human condition appears to be a journey we all undertake to “remember“ Who We Truly Are.  And, on this journey, we all undergo difficult and painful experiences which color our view of ourselves and the world...and each other.  Our work is to find our way back to alignment with the love from which we are sourced.  The brilliant, beautiful love.  The Divine intelligence.  And to do this we all need to heal.  Every one  of us.  In both political parties.  And, most especially, President Donald Trump because his actions affect so many.

How do we go about this healing especially in the midst of such turmoil and suffering?  I believe we begin by asking ourselves this question every time we feel inspired to act:  What Would Love Do?

Our first instinct may be to fight righteously for our cause.  And understandably so.  But the problems we face are so overwhelming at this time that we need to move beyond our usual reactions and step into a greater version of ourselves.  By moving into love.   By understanding that the actions we all take are sourced by our experiences.  And that we all need love and compassion to confront and accept our pain and to grow beyond it to create a world where that same love and compassion become the norm for our interactions.

When we incarnate, we do so with brilliance and purity and light.  With reverence and respect for all life.  With delight for everything we encounter.  It is only after we are shaped by the cares of the world that we are shifted off that path.  We encounter the travails of life on earth.  We become lost in confusion...tethered to uncertainty.

And we must all find our way back to the essence of pure love from which we made our entrance into the adventure of life on earth.

We begin with caring and concern.  For ourselves and others.  We pray for each other.  We feel compassion for others’ painful experiences.  Love then softens our hearts and makes our lives so much easier.  Love finds a way.  And, when it does, we experience the joy and peace of true alignment.

We do not have to know the way to repair the troubles of the world.  We only need to know that love knows.  In this difficult and perilous time,  let us all engage with open minds and hearts in the so important business of healing.
